March 8, 2025**"The Desert Ducks' Riviera Odyssey"**
60 miles west of Las Vegas, on the way to Death Valley, within the Nevada desert, the Dusty Quackers lived among Joshua trees and sage brush, dreaming of the sea. They'd heard tales of endless blue waters and vibrant coastal towns, but it was Devin, the most adventurous duck of the flock, who hatched a bold plan. "Why stay in the desert when the Mexican Riviera awaits?" he exclaimed, holding up a travel brochure left behind by a wandering tourist. The colorful images of sparkling beaches and bustling harbors captured the imagination of the flock. With feathers fluffed and spirits high, they pooled their resources, hitching a ride to the coast on a passing RV. At the port, they boarded a majestic cruise ship they dubbed *The Panorama*, a vessel big enough for a flock full of dreams. Their voyage began with excitement and anticipation, with stops at four enchanting destinations. --- **First Port: Cabo San Lucas** Upon arriving in Cabo, the desert ducks were mesmerized by the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas. They took a glass-bottom boat tour to marvel at the marine life below, squawking in delight as schools of colorful fish swam by. Devin even tried his wing at deep-sea fishing, but the sea proved too clever for his novice attempts. Instead, the flock enjoyed fresh seafood by the shore, a new experience that made their beaks tingle with joy. --- **Second Stop: La Paz** La Paz greeted the ducks with its tranquil waters and stunning sunsets. Here, they embarked on an eco-tour of Espiritu Santo Island, a paradise of natural beauty. Devin led the flock in snorkeling adventures, discovering vibrant coral reefs and swimming alongside playful sea lions. The serenity of La Paz left the desert ducks in awe, a perfect finale to their journey of the day. --- **Third Destination: Mazatlán** In Mazatlán, the ducks explored the historic Old Town, enchanted by its colonial architecture and colorful facades. They stumbled upon a bustling market where they feasted on exotic fruits and marveled at the sweet and spicy aroma of local delicacies. But the highlight of Mazatlán was the golden beach, where the flock built sandcastles and competed in friendly games of wingball (their version of volleyball). --- **Final Stop: Puerto Vallarta** The flock waddled through the charming cobblestone streets of Puerto Vallarta, where they discovered art galleries and local crafts. At the vibrant Malecón boardwalk, they mingled with locals and posed for photos with the sea sculptures. As the sun set, the ducks danced to the lively beats of a mariachi band, their quacks harmonizing with the music in unexpected but delightful ways. --- As the cruise came to an end, the Dusty Quackers returned to their desert home, their hearts filled with memories of turquoise seas, lively towns, and newfound friendships. They brought back seashells and stories, but most importantly, a deep appreciation for the wonders of the world beyond the dunes. From then on, the flock's oasis was known as "Laguna de los Patos Viajeros"—Lagoon of the Traveling Ducks—a tribute to their incredible adventure. Chanda Wieland |
